Wildlife encounters are best when animals remain wild. Observe from a responsible distance and never turn a sighting into a feeding opportunity.

Corolla wild horses
The northern beaches are home to the Corolla wild-horse herd. A reputable guided tour reduces the challenges of driving on sand and helps visitors learn without crowding or feeding the horses.
Give horses space
Never feed, pet, chase or approach wild horses. Human food can cause serious harm, and close interaction creates danger for animals and visitors. Follow all posted distance requirements.
Sea turtles and shorebirds
Keep beaches dark and clear at night, fill holes, remove gear and give marked nests or closures a wide berth. Never handle hatchlings or disturb nesting birds.
Dolphins and marine life
Watch from shore or choose a responsible tour. Do not pursue wildlife, discard fishing line or leave plastics and food waste where they can enter the ocean or sound.
Maritime forests and sound habitats
Kitty Hawk Woods and other protected areas offer opportunities for birding, paddling and nature walks. Stay on designated routes and check conditions before entering.
Photograph responsibly
Use zoom rather than moving closer. Avoid flash, drones where prohibited and any behavior that changes an animal’s direction or pace.
