Confirm the reservation rules
Pet-friendly does not mean unlimited pets. Verify the number, size or breed restrictions, fees and approval requirements before booking. Service-animal requests should be handled directly and separately from ordinary pet reservations.
Town beach rules vary
Leash, seasonal and time-of-day rules differ by municipality and may change. Check the official rule for the town where you will enter the beach rather than assuming one OBX-wide policy.
Protect paws and prevent overheating
Sand, pavement and decks can become dangerously hot. Carry fresh water, provide shade, shorten midday outings and watch for excessive panting or weakness. Saltwater is not drinking water.
At the home
Keep dogs off furniture when required, clean up immediately, prevent repeated barking and never leave a pet loose around service workers, pools or neighboring properties.
Plan pet-free outings
Many attractions, restaurants and tours do not admit pets. Decide in advance whether an adult will remain at the home or whether you need a reputable local sitter or boarding provider.
Emergency preparation
Travel with identification, vaccination information, medication and your veterinarian’s contact details. Identify the closest currently operating veterinary clinic before arrival.
