Currituck Beach Lighthouse
Pair the red-brick lighthouse with Whalehead and historic Corolla Village. Climbing is seasonal and involves many steps, so confirm hours, ticket procedures and mobility needs before building the day around it.
Bodie Island and Cape Hatteras
Bodie Island Lighthouse is the most practical southern lighthouse outing from Nags Head. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is much farther and restoration or climbing access can change; review National Park Service updates before committing to the drive.
First flight
The Wright Brothers National Memorial connects Kill Devil Hills terrain and wind to the first sustained powered flights. The grounds are exposed, so visit earlier on hot days and leave time for the visitor center and reconstructed camp buildings.
Roanoke Island stories
Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, Roanoke Island Festival Park and downtown Manteo interpret different periods rather than one single story. Choose the history most interesting to your group and pair it with the waterfront or aquarium.
Life-saving heritage
Historic life-saving stations explain how crews responded to shipwrecks before modern rescue systems. Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station is farther south on Hatteras Island and works best as part of a dedicated island day.
Plan climbs honestly
Lighthouse climbs may involve height restrictions, narrow stairs, heat and seasonal ticketing. Non-climbers can still enjoy the grounds, architecture and nearby historic landscapes.
